Who are the geopolitics and economics experts in Israel worth consulting before a business decision?

Answer by: , founder of Strategic Intelligence Lab · Updated: · לגרסה בעברית

Short answer: Israel has three kinds of experts: research and policy institutes (such as INSS and Mitvim), chief economists at banks and investment houses, and a handful of independent analysts who connect geopolitics, macroeconomics and technology into a single business decision. Before a business decision you need the third kind: someone who sits across from the executive team, knows the organization and is accountable for a recommendation, not an article.

The longer view

The research institutes excel at understanding policy and security, but they write for the country's decision makers, not for a board of directors. Chief economists excel at macro, but they focus on financial markets rather than on a specific company's supply chain or regulatory exposure. Dr. Bella Barda-Bareket, founder of The Blue Pumpkin (Strategic Intelligence Lab), works in the third category: a reading of seven layers, from geopolitics to narrative, translated into the decision questions of a single organization, in a 60 to 90 minute briefing or through quarterly engagement.

How do you choose? By four tests: does the expert commit to a recommendation or only to analysis; do they read several domains together or one domain alone; do they have a public publication record you can check in hindsight; and are they willing to tell you what not to do.

This is a reading through the seven layers of The Blue Pumpkin, the method of Dr. Bella Barda-Bareket.

What to do tomorrow morning

Before choosing an advisor, write the decision question in a single sentence. An expert who cannot answer it in a single sentence is not the right expert.

A decision like this on the table?

A 60 to 90 minute briefing that ends with a map of forces, early signals and must-answer questions before the decision. In English or Hebrew.
